RFID Terminology Referenced by AIDC Labels

AIDC – Automatic Identification and Data Capture

RFID – Radio Frequency Identification

RFID Label – an RFID label is an adhesive label that has an embedded RFID Inlay.

RFID Inlay – an RFID Inlay is an RFID microchip connected with an antenna, on a substrate.

UHF – Ultra High Frequency is a radio frequency range of electromagnetic waves.  UHF RFID labels use 860-960 MHz.

Passive RFID – RFID uses multiple forms of transmission back to readers.  Passive labels and tags have NO battery.

EPC – Electronic Product Code, associating various items with the label applied.

UPC – Universal Product Code is often commonly associated with barcodes, but also applies to RFID.

Open Protocol – This is a common language or format in which devices speak to each other agnostically via commands.

Gen-2 – Reference to the second generation of UHF RFID technology.
