RFID (Radio Frequency Identification) is relatively new technology of automatic identification and data capture.

RFID is carried out with the help of a unique digital code which is read from the memory of an electronic label or a tag attached to the identifiable object. Reader comprises a transmitter and an antenna that radiates an electromagnetic field with a particular frequency. Caught in the zone of the reader field RFID tags "answer" with their own signals containing information. The signal is detected by the antenna, the information is decrypted and transmitted to a computer for processing.

Distinguished by battery requirement are active and passive RFID labels and tags. Passive labels don't have their own power supply and obtain required energy from the reader. In regard to the information storage on Radio Frequency Identification system, labels are divided into two classes: the first class includes labels with the unique signatures, labels with the digital coding belong to the second class.

RFID tag chips are manufactured either read-only or read-and-write. They can be offered in diverse frequencies, sizes, and can be attached to different surfaces.

Functionally RFID labels are very similar to barcodes, although they have a number of distinctive features: RFID system can read even tags that are hidden, while for barcodes reading beyond line-of-sight is impossible; as opposed to barcodes that are disposable, RFID tags can be reusable because of the overwriting capability.
